Shadows cast strangely through the glass windows, painting translucent flickers on the surface of the dark granite. The sun was blinding, sitting in the corner of his vision, but the man did not make any move to close the heavy green shades. His head rested lightly on the tabletop, eyes following the dancing shadows on its surface. The color of his eyes was hard to make out in the shadow, flickering from blue to gray as his eyes shifted and moved in the sockets. Nostrils flared, catching the warm coffee scent of the paper cup that was sitting on the edge of his vision. Steam curled up like some great beast, rearing and hanging in the air for an instant before being whipped away by the whirling fans.
Dmitri rose slowly, gingerly, as if he might break something. His gimp leg was hanging at an odd angle off the seat as he looked expectantly at the door. These ordinary people fascinated him, standing at the counter as if they had been doing so for their whole lives. Coffee had been a rare taste back home. Here it seemed to be overflowing with coffee and soda and anything else you could want. All expensive, it seemed, not worth it. But today was his day off, and instead of hanging about the barn as he usually did, Dmitri had decided to take a walk, and he had come here. He stirred a bit of false cream into his coffee, watching as it changed into an amber shade in the light of the sun. Nice.

Phillipa walked in through the coffee shop doors. He had been craving a coffee for hours now, but had only just finished dealing with Murphy's leg, which had gone lame. She looked around at the crowded coffee shop. Only two seats were left, and they were at a table with a man. She walked up to him "Mind if I sit here?" she asked him. She was in a good mood today, despite the fact that she couldn't ride Murphy for three weeks. She was in the mood for socialising with new people.
As the coffee fumes reached her nostrils, she felt her craving engolf her. She went up to the counter and ordered a black coffee, with no sugar. Just the way she liked it. Good and strong. She was so tired, and so it would give her the "pick me up" she needed. She took a sip, and let the strong flavour over whelm her. It tased good.

The young woman looked at the stores and shops in front of her and sighed. This was her new home. She wondered what it would be like here if she would make friends or would her dream of having a ranch come true. She sure hoped so. She couldn't get over the fact that how this place was so different from her old hometown. She was born and raised on a ranch in the mountains. Her family ranch was well known to the people that lived in the small town near it. Her parents bred fast and strong horses mostly gyspy vanners. Last year she had decided she would move to the town she was staring at wonder right now so she would accomplish her dream of having her very own ranch . She stopped daydreaming and turn around a corner to another street and saw a cute little coffee shop. She decided to go in. When she opened the door she smelt the strong smells of coffee. She ordered black coffee and turned to see that only one seat was open where a woman and man were sitting. She took a deep breath and walked over and asked 'May I sit here?'

Dmitri looked up at the Phillipa as she spoke, her face dancing in the translucent reflections. He managed a small grin, swallowing abruptly. He seemed to consider for a moment, and then spoke carefully. The words seemed to slosh around on his tongue a bit, heavily accented but still understandable. "No, I do not mind," he seemed a bit unsure of himself, checking the words in his head, and then nodded to himself as she went away to get her coffee. He continued to stare at his own, reflecting the shadow of his form in its deep amber coloration. The steam had died down a bit with the addition of the cream, and it looked drinkable now.
He was broken out of his reverie again by Lorrie, and looked up with a forced grin. He wasn't exactly annoyed by all of this sudden company, he could see that there were no more chairs. But company meant having to speak, and his English still wasn't very good. "Yes, sure," he said a bit oddly in response to her question, then looked back down at the tabletop. He could see his leg, hanging out oddly, and frowned dismally before looking up at them again. "I am called Dmitri, if you care to know." He said, stumbling over the long sentence like a toddler.

Phillipa sat down with her coffee, and stirred it with a plastic sthingy. The man looked like he didn't speak much english. She smiled, and tried to be as friendly as possible. "I;m Phillipa" she said, after taking a sip of the steaming liquid. She felt relaxed, even after the whole thing with Murphy's leg. She sat back, and put her bag by her feet.
She looked up as a girl came towards them. She smiled, and took another mouthful of coffee. The coffee here wasn't as good as the posh stuff she had at home, but she was on her way home, and couldn't resist the craving any more, so she had come to the small coffee shop. She suddenly felt really hungry, so she got up to get a sticky cream bun. Her favourite. She was ment to be stepping away from the sweet stuff, but sometimes she just couldn't stop herself.

Lorrie could tell that the man wasn't from here because of his accent and how he struggled with his english. "Well it's nice to meet you Dmitri. I can tell you aren't good with your english so you don't have to talk if you're not comfortable with it yet. I don't mind."She smiled at him to ease his discomfort. She smiled at the woman that had been sitting but now was passing her to buy something like sweets it looked like. She sat down in her chair and took a sip of the coffee it didn't taste as good as her mother's but it would do. She stared out the window look at the busy street. She kept wondering if this was a good idea about moving but she said silently to herself that things will get better if she believed it would and stopped be a pessimistic person. She looked over at Dmitri and smiled looking into his eyes and not staring at his leg others were doing.

Dmitri watched as a swirl of foam colored the surface of his coffee, then looked up at Phillipa again, blue eyes warm in the haze above the surface of the unlidded cup. His face was half hidden by shadow, but white teeth glinted in the sunlight as he gave another slightly uncomfortable grin, which came out more like a grimace. "Enchanted, both of you," he said, unfamiliar as of yet with the expression 'nice to meet you'. He was nervously going through Russian to figure out what they said, and doing a decent job, at that. He was picking it up fast, being basically forced to. Ivan was the only other person who spoke a speck of Russian, and he was no fun to talk to in the first place.
He looked over at Lorrie with gratitude at her words, with a curt nod. He hovered over his cup, looking slightly threatened and uncomfortable, as if he might flee at any moment. His good leg was planted into the ground, he noticed, though it had been an automatic reaction. It seemed that whenever he talked to anyone around here he had one foot planted in flight. "Thank you, but I do not wish to seem... er... strange? Ah... uncourteous, I think is how you would say. I am sorry, I am no good with English. No rhythm." He shrugged slightly, giving him the appearance of an overgrown Gorilla with a shave.

I smile at him. "It is ok. From your accent I bet you are from Russia, yes? I am half finnish. So I know alittle of your language but yours is slightly different from mine."I look at him and the woman next to me and say " I'm Lorrie. I just moved here from those mountains" I pointed at the mountains that were faraway." My parents own the "Gyspie's Treasure Ranch". Right now I'm just wondering around town getting used to the place. If you any of you two need help with anything come to my place at the edge of town I live in the small brick house."I take another sip of my coffee."God I wish I was drinking my ma's coffee not that this is horrible...well maybe it is."I chuckle.

Phillipa came back to the table, There was another girl sitting there. She took her seat, and bit into the sweet tasting sticky bun. "Don't worry about the English. O have a russian friend, who couldn't speak any english, but she soon picked it up" she smiled. She hoped he could understand her. She knew he was russian from the accent. She remembered how hard it had been explaing things to her friend. She took another sip of coffee.
She looked at the girl "I'm phillipa. Nice to meet you" she said, smiling. She sat back in her chair, looking a little like she had stepped out of a mafia film, with her trilby hat, falling over her eyes. She pushed it back, holding back a laugh. She was ver cheerful today, probably because she had just got her pay check. It always felt good on pay day.

Dmitri gave them a grateful look and a smile as they spoke. "Ah, it is good for me to practice, though," after that he fell staunchly silent, listening to the other two talk. He would have laid his head back on the table again in the flickering light, but he chose not to, compensating by leaning back in his chair, eyes half-lidded and more gray than blue in the dim light. He was glad for Lorrie's chatter, filling the silence that he would have had to inhabit otherwise. In Russia silence was a rare thing, so silences made him feel uncomfortable. "I am from Russia, yes," he said, after both of them seemed to ask.
He finally took a sip of his coffee after a long moment, leaning down to smell it as he did so. Warmth flooded his veins, waking him up a bit. He relaxed his posture slightly, returning his center of balance so that he wasn't leaning so heavily to one side. He was visually more relaxed now, relieved from having to speak English too heavily and just listening to the flow of conversation around him, which helped immensely. When other people spoke it seemed so... effortless. But not for him.

Lorrie looked to Phillipa and said "Pleased to meet you." She than saw that Dmitri had a relieved look on his face. She smiled knowing he was happy not having to talk anymore english. She than asked Phillipa "How long have you lived here? I'm wondering how my new life will be like here. It is so different from my home here it is so busy in the town that is close to my parent's ranch few people live there. This a big change for me hopefully a good change. I've noticed that most people love horses around here. How about you? I came here to make my dream come true finally." She smiled at the woman. She wondered if she would make friends with Dmitri the russian and Phillipa this nice woman. She hopes so. She also thought about what this new lifestyle would bring to her.
