;; This place was so different from Arizona. Here, there were ranches, actual ranches, not the ones with a four-horse stable and a small riding corral. This, this was paradise. Of course it got cold, but it snowed, and that made up for every tongue of wind that licked across your face, scorching with cold. It was never too hot, although the sun could beat down from the heavens, and leave you with a crimson burn. The heat never stretched it's arms up past the low hundreds. Unfortunately, less heat means less swimming pools, but the lake made up for that, the waves that would lap against your ankles, and when you laid your head upon your cushy pillow, the waves would still seem to lap against your legs.
;; Ana sat at a table with only two chairs, tracing the patterns on the table-top with her forefinger. Oh how she had missed this place, but when the one who was supplying most of your money called, that call shant be ignored. A grim smile played upon her lips as she remembered the way her aunt acted. As soon as she stepped off the airplane into Sky Harbor Airport, there she was, rushing at her with a bag on one arm, and love saddled on the other. Before Illiana had nearly gotten the breath squeezed out of her slim body, she had managed to squeak only a short hello. Ah, it was wonderful back in Arizona, but not as wonderful as being here, and there was one person she was absolutely dying to see again.
;; "Number 72!" the man at the counter called, setting up a green drink, topped with a mound of whipped cream onto the counter. Ana slid out of the seat and walked up to the counter, eyes only for the Green Tea Frappaccino. Although the guy smiled and tipped the ball-cap he was wearing, she only thanked him, took the drink, and headed back to her seat. No sound came from the straw as it was slurped, although an odd expression spread across Ana's face. "Starbuck's is so much better," she murmured, taking a chunk of whipped cream from the top with her tongue. Then, the one person that undoubtedly attached her to this place leapt back into her mind, and she found herself wondering if Russian's liked coffee. "I'd think so... if they always live in cold places." Ana murmured, stirring some of the whipped cream into the drink itself.
;; Wonderful muse... it's odd, I didn't think I'd come back just to visit, and end up posting. o.o ;; Hey, it's a short-ish post, but I felt like I was rambling about Green Tea Frappaccino's... must be hungry. ;; 'Bout 450 words.

Dmitri loved autumn. The little nip at the edge of the wind hardly bothered him, and the colorful swirls of autumn leaves were so sheerly beautiful that it made his heart swell to bursting. People were quieter in the fall, as if more pensive, more attentive to what was going on around them. Activity ceased it's roaring whine and became a sedate, low buzz. A backdrop to the pleasure that one gained from simply looking, watching a flash of bright red or orange or hearty pink as a wind rattled its way through the fairly warm air. He had his hands stuffed in the pockets of his fleece jacket, looking appreciatively up at the few trees that bordered the sidewalk, or watching as people walked past. Old ocuples sitting on a bench. Young ones holding hnds and laughing. And he wondered, in a vague sort of way, if they were happy. He hoped they were.
Dmitri himself was feeling a little better, now. The bruise on his face had faded and concentrated to where he could acutally open his right eye now, if not fully. His limp was a little less pronounced, and he was feeling good, comparatively. Not so much pained any more. He'd been doing a lot at Bar None. And he hadn't been trampled yet, thankfully. The coffee shop was one of his favorite haunts when he had free time and needed to relax. He liked to watch people. To wonder how they were feeling, where they had come from. And where they were going. Well, he knew where he was going. He was going to the coffee shop. And he was going to stare at a latte and think about drinking it. He didn't know, however, if he would. He stood outside for a moment, chewing on his lower lip absentmindedly, and looking in, his breath fogging the glass.
He watched as a girl stood up to get her coffee. There was something oddly familliar about her figure, her stride... And then she turned to go back to the table. And suddenly, he felt himself running (stumbling, actually.) to the door, barely halting as he was pulled by the sudden change in air pressure from outside to inside, and a name was flying from his lips like a breath. "Ana!" he halted, ignoring everyone who was staring at him by this point. A grin came over his face in slow motion, a sort of goofy smile, his eyes twinkling with barely supressed joy. It had been so long! And he had thought about her a lot. Too much, maybe. He hobbled over to her, looking every bit the fool. The durak s pogonom. But he wasn't at all embarrased by that. "Ana. Hi!"
((Durak s Pogonom is "the fool with epaulettes". Kind of a joke, since it's a card game term. Yeah.))

;; The orbs that had turned bright green to match the shirt Ana was wearing stared out the window, watching the golden leaves drift off a tree. Although the trunk looked slightly withered in the small patch of dirt it sat in, surrounded by the concrete, the colors made up for that. Yellow-green leaves, ruby red, gold, bright yellow, and even one single neon green one that seemed to stand out from the rest. Her eyes were drawn to it, watching as the wind kicked up, and set the whole bunch thrashing around. Ana's eyes drifted towards an elderly couple sitting tightly bunched on a bench, wrapping their thick coats even closer. As the wind blew, their faces acquired a pink sheen, though they still gazed at eachother with love in their eyes.
;; "Now that's just sappy," Illiana muttered, stirring the half-empty drink in front of her again with the straw. However, the words were spoken as a consolance, as one would do when they say something they don't mean. A sigh escaped between her soft lips, eyes still wandering out the window, though out of the corner of her eye the man in the cap was still letting his own eyes wander to her every couple minutes or so. She was used to eyes roaming to her, as many thought she just didn't belong here. Her hair was normally a length too long for ranching, she wore tight-fitting t-shirts, and more often than not a jacket with warm fuzz on the inside. Not someone who you would expect to be a rancher.
;; She shifted her position to something more comfortable, though she tried to ignore the people walking down the street. For some reason, they were really getting on her nerves. A small child had started bringing the straw through the small gap in the lid of his soft drink, and the squeaking was horrible. Ana only gritted her teeth and continued to watch the leaves flitter down to the ground, resting there as if dejected. Autumn held this sort of melancholy feeling about it, the gorgeous colors of all the trees had to fall away, and then, they lay turning crisp and brown on the ground; although when put into a pile, nothing was more fun than jumping into them and sending the crispy leaves flying.
;; The figure of a running, or rather flailing, man caught her attention, and for a moment she just stared at him as he burst into the door, looking at him like a lunatic. By now, most of the coffee shop was doing the same, eyebrows raised questioningly, and whispers shooting across to their table-mate's ears. Then... Ana! was shouted, and then it dawned on her. It was Dmitri! Although he was standing in the middle of the doorway, she jumped up from her spot and practically ran towards him, grinning. "Dmitri!" she shouted, enveloping him in a hug; many people had either turned their heads, or were continuing to stare, gaping wordlessly at the horrible behavior the two were showing. "No pda!" one mother hissed, the same one who's child wouldn't stop squeaking the straw. At this Ana grinned again, hissing back, "Bug off. However... maybe we should sit down?" Ana asked Dmitri.

Dmitri stumbled back a little bit as she barrelled into him, bracing against the door with his back as it swung lightly against his weight. He stiffened at her touch, arms rigid, body going as still and stiff as if he were a marble man, but, then, seeming to realize where he was and who he was with, he milted, and returned the hug lightly with a light smile still tracing his lips. He was amazed, astounded, to see her again. To see that she was still exactly the same as when she had seemingly dropped off of the face of the Earth. But his heart fluttered at the knowledge that she had come back. Come back to him. And against the slight pressure her frame offered, his heart beat quickly, gladly, and nervous fireworks churned somewhere in his midsection. Breaking the embrace gently, he grinned at her with sheer disbelief. "Ana! Gosh!" He seemed to be trying to assure himself that she was, in fact, really there.
He nodded at her question, still seeming a bit starstuck as he obediently limped to the table, sitting down without taking his eyes off of her. It was if he was afraid that she would simply vanish the moment he lifted his gaze. There was an adoring glint to his gaze, barely visible, but there. He hadn't realized how much he had really liked her until she dropped off the face of the Earth. "I have so much to tell you!" he said, but his voice had trailed off so that it was more of a loud whisper than a loud version of his normal speech. "Ivan's in jail... and I nearly died in a car crash and got beat up in the same day... and now I'm a witness in a crime, and..." he stopped abruptly, realizing that he was rambling a little bit, "I missed you, Ana. I really did. A lot." he said, sincerely, a bit quietly, "And I kept my accent just for you. Promise." His speech seemed quite a bit more fluid now, actually, as he was getting used to speaking in English all the time.
The corners of his mouth seemed about pulled into a permanent smile as he looked at her, drinking in every detail he could, just in case she was really an apparation of his brain's design. But her embrace had been real enough, hadn't it? And here she was, before him, plain as day. He resolved, then and there, not to let her go again. At least not without her knowing exactly how he felt about her. She was the only one in a sea of endless faces here that he truly liked, that he truly considered a friend of his own. And it was quite possible that he had just the teeniest bit of a crush on her. A Dmitri-esque crush, at least. "Oh, I'm sorry," he said, rather stupidly, a curious sort of look crossing his face, "I promised to get you flowers next time I saw you, didn't I?"

;; Through the embrace Ana could feel the cold pouring out of his coat and into the warm shop, not changing the temperature in the slightest. As soon as he was caught in her hug, he seemed to stiffen, as if not expecting it. 'Of course he was! Why else would he yell my name out to the whole shop? Besides, he should know me enough by now to know that he's going to get a hug.' Ana thought, smiling and letting her eyes fall closed for a spare moment. He was definately different. The first thing she noticed was that he was taller. Perhaps it was him standing up straighter, that, or he just grew. The guarded look on Dmitri's face, for the moment Ana had seen it light up like a kid sitting under a christmas free, seemed to have fallen away. Her thoughts were wishful thinking however, as she assumed it was embedded in his personality. The world seemed complete as he hugged her, however lightly, back, and then he pulled away, the grin sliding onto his face, the Cheschire Cat grin.
;; As they both resumed their seats at the table, the Green Tea Frappaccino that had just moments before been the center of everything, seemed to matter next to nothing. There was this look on his face, that just seemed to not believe that they were both sitting here, that she was sitting here. An immensely short path of silence reigned between the two for a moment, and then, to Ana's surprise, Dmitri spoke first. As his news sunk in for the moment, the world seemed to brighten up, and colors grew in strength of their hues. "Ivan's in jail? The world is now perfect!" she sayed, grinning, and leaning back slightly in her chair. "Wait, your eye!" she squealed softly, mouth open, quite horrified. "Who dares to beat you up, and how did you witness a crime?" she questioned.
;; When he said he had missed her, a sad smile creeped onto her face. Why was it sad? Why, she was trying to keep from crying by the sincerity of his words. "I missed you too Dmitri, you're pretty much why I came back," the last part of the sentence slipped out without her knowing, or acknowledging it. Then the sad smile turned into a grin as the situation got less... well... sappy. "And it's beautiful, thank you very much," Ana said, just noticing that he was speaking the English language in a more relaxed tone, as if he had learned it more, or grown accustomed to it. When he said he was sorry, she got confused, for his tone completely didn't match the wonderful smile that seemed to melt into his whole face, as if it was going to stay there forever. Then, when he confessed why he was sorry, she let out a chuckle, "Don't worry about it! I do believe your presence is enough!"
;; Awwwwl done! ;; Geez... muse totally picked up at the end. It's because I got brain food. ^-^;

Ana was right. He had changed. His head was no longer hanging limp from his neck, his eyes no longer on the ground. There was a new note in his voice, a confident note, a note that said that he knew that his feet were on the ground and he knew that he had put them there. He was no longer a pawn to be moved at someone else's expense. He was a living, breathing, fighting human being, with a life that seemed a spark from the shattered ashes that he had brought along with him. The stoic coldness had fallen away from his face, and with it a bit of his stiff obedience and formality. It was a change that had come so slowly that even he did not know it was happening until it had. It was a new lease on life, one that allowed him to look at Ivan and tell him that he was dead wrong.
He chuckled at her comment, but his brow furrowed slightly. As if he wasn't quite so sure that it was a great thing. But he knew, in his heart, that it was good, and that he could do this. At first, he'd been doubtful about his ability to look after four horses, but slowly he was getting used to the idea. At her concern, a surprised look came over his face. "It's not bad. Honest. Ivan did it.... and he might've had every right to. I don't know. I was pretty pissed, to tell you the truth," at that, he realized that she honestly had no idea what he was talking about. So he decided to explain. "It's kind of a long story. But the short version is that Ivan ran over somebody on his way to somewhere. It was pretty bad. I swear he would have killed me if no one else was around to see him. He wanted to run off. I wouldn't let him." A dour expression came over Dmitri's face as he explained, like a storm cloud slowly eclipsing his happiness.
He looked away, but looked up again at her next comment, his expression brightening a little. "Me? Really?" he asked, wondering why it was he that had made her return. Was it possible that she liked him? Liked him despite the fact that he couldn't do everything that normal people could do? The thought was all too wonderful, and he pushed it away with a nagging feeling of discouragement. He grinned at her next comment, "Ne za chto," he replied, the Russian phrase dancing off of his lips. The corners of his mouth twitched with amusement at her next comment, and he grinned at her lightheartedly. "Where've you been, anyway? I thought you had dropped off the face of the Earth." He queried, head to the side slightly. He studied her in silence, unbelievably glad to see her again. He had thought a lot about her proposition, actually. To come and work with her. And now that she had appeared again... Well, he was going to accept. He needed to get away from Ivan, find a better place for Vodka.... All he needed to do was tell his old boss, and he wasn't looking forward to that.

;; Ana couldn't take her eyes off Dmitri's face, more specifically, the black eye that seemed to be fading somewhat. A familiar anger roiled in her stomach, though it didn't show anywhere, except in her eyes. The normally soft pools seemed to harden and glint with a steely gray. This was exactly the reason she wanted to take up karate again... she had taken it in when she was younger in Arizona, for 7 or 8 years, she couldn't really remember. Ah, those were the good days. Trophies were handed out for beating people up, and others for just looking tough, and showing off your skills. And the National and World tournaments, the golden trophy cups that just sparkled in the overhead lights... those were the days. Then of course the world had to crumble.
;; His chuckle brought her back down to earth, and she noticed the furrow between his brow. The horses back at Phoenix Racing Stables had come back into her mind, and she wondered what had become of them. Had Josh taken care of them? He should've, for the note that explained everything was on her house's door. Then Dmitri, of course, popped back into her mind, and silence reigned for a while. 'If Ivan's in jail, how has he kept up with all the horses that ass has?, she thought. His words sparked the anger once again, and it was clear the life she had lived in Arizona for a month or so was much different than here. "He most certainly could not have had the right to!" she whispered, her tone quite harsh. How could he even say that? Ana silenced herself and leaned back in her chair, listening as Dmitri told the short version of the story. "Well, good for you. I'm sure he would've loved to just dash away like a weasel..." Ana muttered, cranium turning to look at another ruby leaf floating down from the tree.
;; He looked genuinely surprised at her comment about him, and when he replied, a rosy blush creeped over her cheeks. "Um, yah." was all that managed to come out. What had suddenly happened to her? The confidence seemed to vanish... was this what true love was? A small, but deep breath vanished between her lips, and then Dmitri spoke again, and a smile appeared. "That's wonderful, your accent has always been wonderful." Illiana repeated the words in her head, but they didn't sound nearly as glorious. "Oh. I had a note on the door of my house, apparently you didn't see.... sorry. Well, I went to Arizona because my aunt called. She's the one who's been the mother-figure to me my whole life. We went shopping, and of course she questioned me endlessly about the ranch," Ana said, leaving off the part she had pried for most. The words echoed in her mind, Any cute boys you've met? "I couldn't have dropped off the Earth, silly. There's no oceans in Arizona."
xx. All done. xx. I'm so pissed at this blasted computer. D: I had to retype the whole thing... but must came to me on this one. x]

Dmitri didn't even really notice that she was staring at him - he was far too busy returning the favor with a rather smitten expression on his face. Her harsh words startled him a bit, and he cringed, but shook his head slightly, as if he disagreed. "Where I come from, with my social standing, what he did wasn't uncalled for. It's different here, but he has to hang onto something. So do I," he explained, his voice quiet, looking through her rather than at her, as if ashamed. His face had become sober and pensive, but he listened to her as she spoke anyway, and nodded quietly. He was, honestly, a little bit shaken by her harsh tone, and was wondering what he had done wrong. but the expression faded when he saw the rosy tint picking up in her cheeks, and he half-grinned at her, deciding not to persue the subject any longer in case she turned into a tomato.
"Aw. Thanks." he said to her next comment, and it was his turn to flush. He wasn't quick to blushing, but the tips of his ears still turned a rather rosy shade, and the barest tint crept into his cheeks. He nodded at her explanation. "No, I didn't. I didn't really go to your house, I mean..." he broke off, head cocked again. Had she expected him to find it? It wasn't his style to show up unannounced, honestly. "Sounds fun, though. You're lucky to be able to see your family." ...Not that he would want to see his, really. He was just one kid among seven, and no doubt his parents were glad to have one less mouth to feed. A dour expression crossed his face again at the thought, and he pushed it away quickly. He laughed at her next comment, a single full-bodied noise, a grin grossing his face. "Hey, as far as I was concerned, you were in Antarctica. But you're back now, and I'm just glad that you are." He meant it, he really did.
"Say, speaking of your ranch..." his speech became a little halting here, a quaver of nervousness biting somewhere at the back of his throat, "I thought about it. Your offer, I mean. And... I think I'd like to come work for you. I'm tired of Ivan. I'm tired of being the only one who gives half a care for his horses, too. They're mine now... Temporarily, at least. Probably for a while. And, well... They need to get out of that place, honestly. I do to." He bit his lip nervously, looking unsure of himself. But now that he had said it, there was no taking it back. Which was a good thing, he supposed, since if he had stopped before he had said it, he never would have opened his mouth. "...Now I just need to tell Ivan that. Preferably without bodily injury, although this time I'll probably deserve it."

;; When he cringed, she immediately remembered that he didn't like harsh voices. An apologetic look came over her face, "Sorry Mitri. It's just... he should never have right to hit you. Too bad you're not 18." Ana said, grinning, and pulling all the harshness out of her voice and face. Then she let out a soft sigh as he tried to explain the background behind his comment. "Mitri, I'm so sorry if this comes out the wrong way... but it's not Russia here. And besides, you have a way higher social standing than him in my eyes." Illiana explained, eyes drifting slightly to the Green Tea Frappaccino that was left, half-empty, and abandoned. She really needed to stop with the grating voices... it was clear Dmitri didn't like it.
;; When Dmitri blushed, Ana really didn't realize it. It was so faint in his cheeks that one might've just thought it was from the chill in the air outside, although it was plenty warm inside the coffee shop, not to mention the delightful aromas. When he trained off, Ana let out a small laugh, "It wasn't in the house, silly. It was on the door!" She hadn't really thought about Dmitri's family, though she knew he had asked him about them before. She racked her mind for anything about his family. Did he just not even talk about them? Or did he just barely scrape it and then move on to something else? "Antarctica's way too cold," Ana mused, grinning all the while. "I'm sure the penguins and seals always wake you up too early in the morning too. I'm glad I'm back too."
;; When the topic of her ranch was broached, Illiana inclined her head to the side a bit, wondering what he was going to say. She listened to his halting speech, trying to contain from screaming the word yes. "I'd love for you to come work at Phoenix Racing Stables! Bring anyone you like, and Bartok! Oh, I'm sure he'll just be overjoyed to see you again! Man, he's missed you, but Josh took great care of the horses while I was gone. I even hired someone else, but... nevermind. Now I'm just rambling, nice going." Illiana said, clapping a hand over her mouth to keep from babbling anymore. When Dmitri finished talking Ana shook her head slightly, though she was still grinning like a goof. "If you say stuff like that again, I'm going to dump this green drink on you. Now, can I please come?" she begged, only joking about dousing him in the Green Tea Frapp.
;; All done!

He studied her silently as her mood changed completely at his words. He was still a little bit shocked at her bitter reproof, but he decided to waive it. After all, she had forgiven him when he spoke to hastily and got annoyed. He was surprised at her calling him Mitri. Where had that sprung from? It had a nice ring to it, at least. He shrugged noncommitally at the rest of the sentence, and gave her a funny look at her next comment, and then sighed. "I know it's not," he murmured, "and I don't really want it to be, either. Like I said, it's different here. And that's not necessarily such a bad thing." He leaned back, his fingers locked together behind his head, his eyelids half closed as he continued to look at her. He eyed the green drink dubiously for a moment with a shudder.
He rose an eyebrow at her next comment, feeling as if he had misunderstood something gravely but not knowing what it was. "Well, I didn't go to your door, either," he said, still trying to figure out what exactly it was that he was missing. He decided to let it go, and was immensely relieved that Ana didn't push the whole 'family' thing. To be honest, he wasn't too thrilled with his family. They weren't bad, for the most part... but he returned their indifference except for a portion of his salary that he sent them each month, to make sure that his siblings were fed. He chuckled at Ana's shpeil about Antarctica. "Too cold?" he queried, "I thought you were a polar bear! And you like the snow!" ...Unlike him. He couldn't stand the stuff. It seemed to be dead set on concentrating on whatever patch of the world he happened to be standing on, too...
He sat up sharply at her excited outburt, a grin springing to her lips and a chuckle dancing at the edges of his throat. "Bartok! I haven't seem him in a while," Dmitri said, and was instantly flooded by guilt that he hadn't come to visit the stallion sooner. But so much had been happening... he hardly had the time, after all. "I miss him, too, honestly... But I guess now I'll get to see him all the time, huh?" A grin crossed his face like the sun. Sudden purpose and reassurance raced through his heart, and he felt like he could do this. He could say no to Ivan, and follow some new path into some new future. For a long time he had been afraid of not knowing exactly where he was headed, but now he was excited, inticed by the prospect of forging into the unknown. As long as Ana was there with him... He was, frankly, surprised at her proposition of coming with him. Oh... kay... He shuddered at the prospect of having the foreign liquid poured on his head. "Uh... are you sure you really want... oh, never mind. Fine. You can come with me." He stood up, offering her a hand, "and you can take your... whatever that thing is... with you, too. If we delay, I'll end up never doing it."

;; Oh, how good it was to be back here, and with Dmitri sitting right across from her, the world seemed to be perfect. Ana let a soft sigh escape between her lips. There was no boredom, no awkwardness, just... happiness. Everything was the way it should be. The horses were happy, though Breaking Dawn and Robbie definately needed to be back out on the track. Bartok was going to get the surprise of her life, and Ana was looking forward, more than anything, to see a huge smile break over Dmitri's face as the two were reuinited once again. It seemed as if the smile was plastered permanently onto Illiana's face, but it always was like that. She was overall just a happy person, getting drunk on life, and not sloshing through, but skipping, and taking a merry stroll. Dmitri again spoke, and Ana nodded her head thoughtfully.
;; "Didn't you go to the ranch at all? Especially when I wasn't here?" Ana questioned, tilting her cranium quizically. That would've been the first place she would've gone, but Dmitri was different, and that's what made him amazing, and yet, confusing. A wonderful chuckle came to her ears, and Ana had no choice but to laugh as well. "I'm not a polar bear! I'm usually freezing! Oh, I love snow all right, but that comes from me living in Arizona, well... Scottsdale most of my life. It never snows there! It's always hot, though thankfully not humid. Yuck... humidity is horrible." Ana stopped talking about the weather, shaking her head at herself. For gawd's sakes, they were talking about the weather!
;; Dmitri seemed very excited about seeing Bartok, and Ana was immensely glad at that. It was clear the stallion had been pining since Dmitri dropped him off at Coal to Fire Acres. "He's going to be so happy to see you! No more missing him, the world is going to be even more perfect!" Illiana told Dmitri, eyes shining happily. It pleased her that Dmitri seemed to be finally looking forward to the future, instead of dwelling in the past. As he stood up, and started talking, Illiana grinned again, "As if you could stop me... you probably could." She took the hand and stood up, grabbing the abandoned drink with the other hand. "It's a Green Tea Frappaccino, and I'll throw it away, so you don't have to look at it." Ana laughed, tossing it into the nearest trashbin.
