Gwen led her dark bay mare to the head of a small, fairly unused trail. Choco pranced in place beside a large boulder that Gwen was standing on to try and mount. Once her left foot was in the stirrup, she swung easily into the waiting saddle, worn and soft from almost constant use. After fixing her stirrups and adjusting her seat, she pushed her mare into a quick walk, eager to get away from everything.
About halfway towards the end of the trail, she stopped abruptly because a large rabbit sat in front of them and Choco was becoming nervous. The rabbit, being curious, hopped quickly towards the agitated mare, and Gwen held her reins tight with contact to keep the mare from trampling the poor thing and bolting. Too late, the mare gave a nervous buck and together Gwen and her horse bolted towards a small stream just off the trail.
They easily jumped it, but Gwen was not ready for it and slid off accidentally and hit the hard dirt while her horse kept going for a few more strides before slowing and eventually stopping, staring cheekily at the dusty Gwen sitting on the ground.
"Sheesh, Choco! It was just a stupid rabbit! Not a bear or something!" Gwen exclaimed in frustration to her feisty 'young' mare. After she caught and cooled Choco down, they waited around for awhile to make sure she had fully calmed.
Just then they heard something coming through the trees....
