Chapter 1
It was a cool summers day when Lightning, the grey New Forest Pony filly and her friends were cantering around, swerving in and out of the trees and jumping over rocks. “Watch me!” Batty, a black Thoroughbred colt called to Star, a chestnut Paint filly “what now show off” she replied laughing while Batty raced Lightning and lost, again “your really bad” Lightning said and settled down as dusk approached “look at the sunset” Star whispered, this was a beautiful moment and she didn’t want to break it. “It can’t be sunset yet” Batty said nervously and trotted to Lightning “what is it?” Lightning said and she sniffed the air “fire, it’s a fire” then she reared and galloped to star “it’s a fire” she said and then the three of them galloped together to find the rest of their herd. “Mum, Dad” she called but there was only hoof prints in the grassy plains “Rose” Batty said joyfully when his younger sister came out from under a bush “where is the herd?” Rose then sighed “they galloped off as they smelt something”. Lightning, Batty, Star and Rose followed the hoof prints but later on saw very heavy hoof prints “people captured the herd” Lightning whispered suddenly a gunshot skimmed Batty’s tail and hunters came out with nets but luckily Lightning and the other foals had sprung into a gallop and into the forest but the hunters had jumped on their ‘tame’ horses and came after them. “Quick, in the lake” Lightning shouted and waded through the cold water but on the bank was quicksand “what about the sinky sand” Rose shouted as Lightning galloped over the quicksand, going to fast to sink “gallop over it” she shouted and they all crossed the sand but the hunters horses leaped gracefully over the bank. None of the friends talked while this chase was on, they only galloped, jumped and swerved through the dense forest until Rose was falling behind “Rose” Lightning called but it was to late, a lasso was neatly tied round her neck and she was being pulled along by hunters. “I LOVE YOU ROSE” Batty called to his sister before galloping off with Lightning and Star, further through the forest they saw hoof prints of the herd “they came this way” Star pointed out so the three horses followed the tracks but no signs of horses was seen “where are they?” Batty whispered to Lightning “they are still galloping, we will never catch them up unless they stop” she replied and then went into a sprint, with Batty and Rose at her side she felt in control. “I wonder where Rose is right now” Batty sighed, stopping at the lake and looking at his reflection in the water “I’m a failure, I should of saved Rose” he said to himself when Lightning came up “your as good as any stallion Batty” she whispered and then trotted to Star “Lets settle here for the night, hopefully the herd will come back looking for us” she said boldly and lied down next to Batty “hey Lightning” he said while wading in the lake. “Hey Batty” she said and joined him in the river “you would make a great lead mare” he whispered “us two could be your herd” “you would be the lead stallion Batty” Lightning replied and tossed her mane before splashing Batty “yeah right!” she laughed and cantered around having fun. The next morning the three foals followed the hoof prints of their herd again “look the tracks have stopped” Star said as they came to a stream “no, you don’t say” Batty replied sarcastically “quiet you two” Lightning snapped before crossing the stream to find no tracks “they went this way” she said seeing hoof prints in the mud at the bottom of the stream “we have to wade through the water” Star said and she flicked her tail up to stop it getting wet. The stream was cold but the current was weak so the foals carried on their journey to find the herd “What if we never find them?” Batty questioned Lightning “then we keep on going, following the tracks to find out what happened” she replied and then saw a horse. Lightning galloped up. “Excuse me” she said politely “hello Lightning” the horse answered “gran” Batty shouted and galloped up to her “where is the herd?” Star said looking at the kind mares face “they went to the mountains but told me to stay here to look for you lot” she replied kindly “so lets go” Lightning said and cantered towards the mountains to find their parents. At the top of the mountains they saw no horses at all “where are they” Star said but she got no answer until Batty’s gran started to speak “they never went to the mountains, they were caught” she said and then as if she had conjured up the hunters herself there was a gunshot and a hunter got ‘gran’ and pulled her to him “Run little ones, save your skin” she neighed. The foals galloped down the mountain as fast as there legs would carry them, they only new one thing and that was to escape, the foals reached the bottom at last but they still wasn’t safe.
Chapter Two
There was a small neigh and the horses looked behind them to see Rose escaping and galloping towards them “come on then” she said galloping past them so the foals kicked in to a gallop and caught up with her. “This is the life” shouted Star giggling as the hunters horses just refused to jump over a fallen log “stupid tame horses” she neighed in delight but then they jumped over the log gracefully. It was hours later when the hunters stopped chasing them to get food and drink so the foals grazed and drunk and a nearby lake before cantering off again so the hunters wouldn’t find them. “What shall we do Lightning?” Rose said lying down at the mouth of a cave “stay here and rest” she replied going into the cave and seeing a small waterfall and pool of water which was almost overflowing. “I found water” she neighed as Batty came to her side and drunk the refreshing water “wow, its so nice” he said about to go in the water but Lightning stopped him “don’t go in, you will make it dirty” she snapped and then scraped at the ground near the waterfall. “What are you doing?” Star questioned looking puzzled “trying to make a pool” Lightning replied and Batty laughed “that is impossible the stone is to hard” he said but Lightning had the last laugh as the stone was mouldy and damp so the it was as weak as cotton. “See you probably could make a bath” she said then the other two fillies started to scrape at the stone and it did start to peel away “wow this is really weak…” Star started to say but Batty interrupted “that’s because its charcoal” and he was right the very black stone was just lots of charcoal. As the four foals dug ,Batty reluctantly joined in, the bath was beginning to get deeper and wider until it was as big as the waterfall pool. “Well that’s over and done with, how do we get the water” Batty laughed and reared delightfully sending a bang when he hit the floor “ouch, my hoof” he said and the girls laughed “your so stupid Batty, but that’s why your our friend” Lightning said and walked over to him “I love you” she whispered in his ear and then walked outside the cave to graze. Batty came limping after her. Star and Rose laughed at Batty then saw the pool overflowing “that’s the answer to Batty’s question” Rose said as the pool water went into the bath and started to fill “we should drink the pool water when the bath fills up” Star said and the bath was filling up fast. “Yes Batty” Lightning said when he had came over “I love you too Lightning but we are foals not adults” he said “we are to young to get into a relationship” Lightning was furious with this comment “we are almost two years old” she snapped then trotted away with her tail held high. Star and Rose was drinking a lot then ran around to be more thirsty but this made them queasy “my stomach hurts” Rose complained and lied down but Lightning hurried in “there is about 15 foals galloping across the plains and there lost, we should help them” she said and galloped towards what looked like the leader. “Yes ma’am” he said politely “hi, my name is Lightning and I live in that cave over there, I was wondering whether you would join me and my friends to make a small herd” she said and bowed her head “of course, my name is Blaze” Blaze replied and then together they walked to the cave with the other foals following. “I hate that Blaze, he thinks he is all that when I’m the true lead stally” Batty was saying to Lilly, one of Blazes sisters “yes, he is quite precocious” Lilly replied and then got up “Lightning, I would like a word” so she came over “yes Lilly” Lightning said to her when they were alone “Blaze isn’t the one for you” she blurted out “what do you mean Lilly” Lightning said staying calm “Batty deserves to be lead stallion not my brother!” she shouted and then walked off. That night Lightning went over to Batty who was staring at his reflection in the pool “are you up yet for a relationship?” she asked “maybe, how does Blaze feel about it?” he snapped back “not you as well, why does everyone think I’m in love with blaze” she said “because you spend so much time with him and giggling with your heads together” Batty replied then Lightning dropped her head but didn’t say a word “see, you see why” Batty said getting angry but Lightning still didn’t speak “TALK STUPID FILLY” Batty shouted at the top of his lungs and then Lightning started to cry “you hate me now don’t you” she sobbed and galloped away.
Chapter 3
It had been six hours since the argument between Lightning and Batty and he was feeling quite sad. Batty had this around his mind all day until Lilly came to cheer him up “hey Bat, you thinking ‘bout the argument” she said kindly “you heard then” he replied “the whole herd heard Bat” she said to him and then smiled “I know what will make you happy, Blaze is…” she started before Lightning trotted up to them “oh I see, you didn’t want me because you had her as you girl” she said and then stalked off, head and tail held high. Lightning was upset so she went to do what she did best and that was competing with a jumping competition. “Everyone come join me in this cross-country course” she shouted and lots of colts laughed and then nudged each other “a filly” they were saying “cannot win a competition” but Lightning liked this “compete then, it will be a steeplechase” she said and then the colts joined then came the sound of the crash of hooves and they were off. Lightning was third with a black thoroughbred colt out in front, it jumped perfectly and raced at a high speed “who is in front” she called to the foal in second but they just told her to shut up and race. Lightning increased her speed and then overtook the colt in second place “who is the colt there as he is gorgeous” she said to herself and then sped up trying to get a glimpse at him but the thoroughbred galloped on, his stamina was excellent and his pace just right. Lightning couldn’t pick out any fault with him “good height as well” she said as he was 16.2hh. The colt galloped on seeing Lightning behind him as he races forward, gasping for air Lightning sped up as she reached the colts silky tail then the thoroughbred colt turned his head and slowed down “Its me” the colt said “Batty…” Lightning started but took this opportunity and galloped on as Batty was trotting steadily. Lightning galloped her heart out and jumped quickly so she was the winner of this steeplechase. Batty was mad, he stormed off into the cave and Lilly followed “competitive Lightning” he muttered under his breath. “What’s up Bat” she said cheerfully “Lightning” he sobbed and then walked over to the bathing lake “Batty please, she is just competitive” Lilly said but Batty had already put his hoof into the lake and then his whole body “calm down filly, I’m only taking a bath”. Lightning went over to Blaze after winning the race “congrats girly” he greeted her with a nuzzle “thanks Blaze, actually I was wondering how about we move the herd onwards just to be safe” she said wearily “of course gorgeous” he replied and then reared and neighed at his loudest “watch” he said and all the horses, including Batty and Star, came behind him and Lightning. “Lets go!” they cried together and with the sound of hooves the herd were galloping away. It had been ages but finally the herd reached the coast and luckily it was deserted “lets swim and see where the waves take us” one horse said “no way, we will drown” another horse replied “quit the yap colts” Lightning snapped and they instantly responded. She paced and then looked up, Batty and Lilly were laughing together and Lightning stamped her hoof on the wet sand immediately. The herd were mature but still classed as colts and fillies but Lightning didn’t care, she still walked over and looked straight into Batty’s eyes “Batty, Batty, Batty…I must say I really thought I would be placed before her” she said and Batty sighed “that’s it Lightning, go off thinking about yourself again, typical you!”. Lightning felt her eyes prick and she quickly walked away. By the time she had reached the sea she had burst into tears and Blaze quickly came up “what’s up honey?” he asked and Lightning looked at him “leave me alone Blaze, leave this herd now and go ‘cause we don’t need you we need Batty” she shouted and he stepped back “fine Lightning, but you will be sorry”. With that Blaze left and then Batty walked up to Lightning and smiled before putting his head over her neck and whispered “let Alliances Begin…”.
