It was really the explosion that hurt the humans, it was a chemical from the explosion that killed them off. They wrecked most of the land, and made a massive earthquake happen, shifting the continents around. The oceans became much smaller and shallower, and the horses swam across the now tiny Atlantic Ocean to Crest Isle, a unharmed peace of land.
Once they arrived, the horses began to split off into herds, and now, you must live on Crest Isle.
